CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ In the 1930s, famous aviators Wiley Post and Harold Gatty landed the Winnie Mae at the old Eau Claire field after finding the Chippewa Falls runway too short. They stopped briefly to refuel, and hundreds quickly arrived to witness the unscheduled landing. WQOW
- ➤ Putnam Heights was home to Eau Claire’s first airport, which started in 1919 and hosted flight schools and exhibitions for 20 years before plans for a larger facility led to the modern Chippewa Valley Regional Airport in the early 1940s. WQOW
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Students at UW-Eau Claire started their spring semester on Monday after a month-long winter break, and they will prepare for final exams scheduled for the second full week of May. WEAU

- ➤ Staff and volunteers from local shelters + community organizations will begin a Point-In-Time Count of unsheltered individuals in Eau Claire and nearby counties at 11 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, with a post-count survey continuing until Feb. 4. WEAU

- ➤ Anthony Ledford, a former convict turned fitness advocate, is a finalist in a contest for a Muscle & Fitness magazine feature and a $20,000 prize; he trains at the downtown YMCA and plans to donate over half his winnings to build a tiny home for a Menomonie family. WQOW
