In the 1930s, famous aviators Wiley Post and Harold Gatty landed the Winnie Mae at the old Eau Claire field after finding the Chippewa Falls runway too short.

They stopped briefly to refuel, and hundreds quickly arrived to witness the unscheduled landing.

Putnam Heights was home to Eau Claire’s first airport, which started in 1919 and hosted flight schools and exhibitions for 20 years before plans for a larger facility led to the modern Chippewa Valley Regional Airport in the early 1940s.
