Local fire departments in Eau Claire, Altoona (and Township) kicked off the 29th Keep the Wreath Green campaign with a goal to keep every wreath light green by avoiding major fire damage.

The campaign runs from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day (each red light means a severe fire response), reminding residents of the risks during the holiday season.

Old Abe was captured as an eaglet in Chippewa Valley and traded to farmer Dan McCann before flying with the Wisconsin 8th Infantry Division during the Civil War—his image boosted soldiers' morale and his legacy lives on in local monuments and symbols as a reminder of the Union's fight. His story connects Chippewa County to a national icon and regional pride.
