COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Feed My People Food Bank has seen record numbers of new pantry visitors and expects high demand to continue even with FoodShare funding returning. Executive Director Padraig Gallagher said delayed SNAP payments and rising costs forced many to rely on these services — small donations will be matched until December 2 to help reach a $150,000 goal. - ➤ In Eau Claire’s Eastside Hill, the Friberg family started a bakery stand at Chapin Street and Highland Avenue to raise funds for their two-year-old son Simon’s therapy, which is not covered by insurance. Nearly one hundred items have been sold in two weeks—helping pay for his essential therapies. WQOW
- ➤ The Lismore hotel hosted a free dinner Monday, Nov. 17 from 5—7 p.m.—the come as you are event at 333 Gibson St in Eau Claire served pasta with red sauce, meatballs, salads, breadsticks, and dessert. WEAU
- ➤ Chippewa Falls native Terri Betts crocheted 60 scarves to help neighbors stay warm this winter. She spent over 400 hours on the project (with an estimated cost of about $300 to $400) and tied them downtown with tags (offering them free to anyone in need). WEAU
- ➤ Western Dairyland received a $250,000 donation from C&M Homebuilders to support its new day resource center for people experiencing homelessness. The facility, which will host Haven House and the Economic Opportunity Council, will open next month—an important step in the nonprofit’s $6.4 million campaign. WQOW
- ➤ The Wisconsin Farmers Union is hosting a thank-you letter writing party today at Market on River to let community members write notes to local farmers — all supplies are provided for making hand-written cards. WEAU
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ At Monday's meeting, Altoona's school board shared survey results on a referendum to address rising enrollment; 64% of respondents supported the $15.6 million option — the board will meet in December — to decide if the vote is added to the April 2026 ballot. WEAU
- ➤ A letter to parents announced that the district will not move forward with plans to consolidate elementary schools including Flynn, Longfellow and Roosevelt after preliminary recommendations on September 15. The administration will continue assessing ideas to address declining enrollment but no major changes will take place until the 2027—28 school year. WEAU
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Tony Evers visited UWEC Campus Harvest Food Pantry Monday and said nearly 700,000 Wisconsinites including 270,000 kids depend on FoodShare. He toured the pantry — which serves students in need — and urged lawmakers to work together to lower rising costs for essential needs. WEAU
- ➤ Eau Claire’s Green Waste Facility on Jeffers Road will close for the season on November 22. The site remains open Monday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.—check local guidelines for acceptable materials. WEAU
- ➤ A local group is unhappy as changes to the county budget delayed Lake Altoona’s dredging project from next winter to December, which pushes dam repairs planned for 2026 into a later cycle. The Friends of Lake Altoona hope county officials stick to the new schedule so the drawdown needed for safer boating occurs soon—an important step for local water safety. WQOW
