COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Junkin' Market Days is a unique market held this weekend at the Eau Claire Event District that features mostly homemade items such as home decor, clothing, jewelry, furniture, candles, and seasonal decorations. The event runs (today from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) with tickets costing $5.  WQOW
  • Catholic Charities handed out over 80 boxes of free diapers, wipes, and other supplies—donated by locals—to families in need on National Kindness Day. Luke 3:11 offered free winter coats and boots, and officials said that starting in January, the Grace Community Pantry will open twice a month while Catholic Charities will give away crockpots with gift certificates and a cookbook.  WEAU
  • C&M Home Builders donated $250,000 to support a new Day Resource Center in downtown Eau Claire that will offer daytime shelter, case management, and access to housing and healthcare for people facing homelessness. The donation expands services beyond Community Haven House and supports Western Dairyland Economic Opportunity Council’s capital campaign—boosting vital community relief.  WEAU
  • Today, the Eau Claire Community Foundation announced it awarded $198,000 in grants from the William A. Bingham Family Endowment Fund to three local nonprofits—American Red Cross received $71,000 for a new blood collection vehicle, Grace Lutheran Foundation secured $84,000 for a wireless nurse call system, and Hope Gospel Mission got $43,680 to support a case management supervisor. The grants were approved after careful review and aim to enhance services for people in our community.  WEAU
  • The Family Resource Center is holding its first winter clothing drive at Oakwood Mall to help Chippewa Valley families by collecting gently worn coats, hats, boots, gloves, and mittens from community members—donations will be accepted until 7 p.m. today—and an open house on Saturday will let families shop the clothing for free.  WQOW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Wonders of Nature in downtown Eau Claire now faces a federal hemp sale ban that gives the shop 365 days to comply or close, and owner Chris Buske said his business self-regulates by selling only to adults—he fears customers may seek illegal sources if the shop shuts its doors. This change follows a federal bill that ended a long shutdown and included a new clause targeting intoxicating hemp products.  WQOW

  • Manz Elementary reached its food drive goal on Thursday as students gathered in the gym and enjoyed healthy servings of pie—marking a joyful end to the school day. The celebration recognized the school’s community effort in meeting its target.  Leader-Telegram
  • A release of the 2024-25 state report card shows that many Chippewa Valley schools are meeting state expectations while others are exceeding them—data that highlights both solid performance and areas for continued growth.  Leader-Telegram

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials are planning to restore passenger rail service in Eau Claire more than 60 years after the last train left; a feasibility study will review station locations, train frequency and track upgrade costs. Scott Rogers from the West Central Wisconsin Rail Coalition said the new service — which aims to reconnect the Chippewa Valley to the nation — could enhance travel and local access.  WEAU
  • After the government reopened yesterday, local agencies said a 43-day shutdown stressed families as The Community Table served up to 100 people daily and now expects numbers to drop to 70 to 80—travel officials noted that some flight cancellations may continue.  WEAU

  • A new plan seeks to build a Chipotle on the last undeveloped lot in Altoona's River Prairie district — the planning commission approved a site plan dividing the lot into three parts for a restaurant, a commercial building, and future development. The proposal will go to city council on Nov. 20 for public comment before the developer applies for permits to begin construction in spring.  WQOW

  • UW-Eau Claire volleyball continued its WIAC tournament run in the semifinals against UW-La Crosse on November 13, and Mondovi football will face Edgar in the division six playoffs — McDonell football will debut in the state finals. Black River Falls Co-op swimmer Hannah Tubbs will defend her division two state title in the 100 freestyle in her upcoming meet — further details are expected soon.  WEAU
  • The 5th annual Positive Vector marathon and half-marathon will take place on December 13 when the marathon starts in Bloomer and the half-marathon starts in Chippewa Falls, both ending in Eau Claire while donating proceeds to NAMI Chippewa Valley — an event honoring former UWEC alum Corey Hilber. A group of friends first organized this race in December 2021 to support mental health education, advocacy and support.  WEAU
