COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Eau Claire Community Humane Association offers a $50 discount on adoptions for dogs over 2 years old or in the shelter longer than a month during Adopt a Shelter Dog Month to help free up space as wait times reach about one month. The shelter accepts visitors at 1—4 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 1—7 p.m. on Thursdays. WQOW
- ➤ Dozens of parents, students and community members gathered outside the district office to support keeping Flynn, Roosevelt and Longfellow Elementaries open amid falling enrollment — they asked the district to look at other options instead of closing a school. The school board has not yet set a date to discuss the possible closures. WQOW
- ➤ Perry Kuznar, a Wisconsin native, is biking 3,000 miles across eight states to raise money for local nonprofits — Hope Gospel Mission, Chippewa Valley Veteran Tribune Foundation, Sunrise Exchange Club, and Immaculate Conception Parish. He started his ride in San Diego and will travel for two months until he reaches St. Augustine. WEAU

CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Old Abe was a female eagle born in 1861 near Jim Falls who served as a Civil War mascot for soldiers after being traded for corn. She later raised funds and lived at the Statehouse in Madison before dying in a fire—her image has inspired the name of Eau Claire Memorial High School and is featured at the Chippewa Area History Center. - ➤ Families from the Eau Claire Area School District gathered outside the administration building Monday chanting 'Save our schools' amid elementary consolidation discussions—showing their concerns over potential school changes. Leader-Telegram
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today Highway 12 in Eau Claire County will close just east of the Fall Creek bridge for a village sanitary sewer project until next Tuesday, October 14 — drivers must use a detour via County I and County J that leads through the south end of Fall Creek and up State Street to rejoin Highway 12. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Free flu shots will be offered to both children and adults at clinics in Altoona, Eau Claire, and Fall Creek this October. The Health Department and NorthLakes Community Clinic will provide vaccines on October 8 at Fall Creek School District—October 21 at the Altoona Police Department and October 22 at South Middle School, with appointments required at the drive-through Altoona site.
