- ➤ Altoona Public Library is applying for a grant to expand its building and update its space—its city council has already taken the first step. The library and city will finish their application by the end of October and hope to know if they win the grant by year’s end. WQOW
- ➤ Eau Claire Police Department and local groups are hosting a free event to teach parents how to spot and stop online sextortion at the Eau Claire Event District on October 1 from 4:30 to 8 p.m. The event features a resource fair and panel discussion—helping families learn key steps to protect children. - ➤ Ronald & Joyce Wanek Foundation and Ashley Furniture Industries were named WiRSA 2025 Community Partner of the Year for their innovative partnership with Whitehall School District—since 2018, they introduced the Mobile Skills Laboratory and opened the Whitehall Regional Emerging Technology Laboratory in 2024 to enhance rural STEM education. - ➤ The Eau Claire Police Department will begin accepting applications next week for five patrol officer vacancies as it works to address staffing challenges—candidates will face physical and written tests, interviews and detailed background checks. WQOW
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Eau Claire Health Department has interns dragging a heavy sheet along park trails in the Chippewa Valley to collect ticks for lab analysis—microbiologist Savannah Bergman said her team checks each tick’s type, stage, and disease risk. The lab work helps the department track tick-borne illness risks and spot any new species in the community. WQOW
- ➤ The Eau Claire City-County Health Department has collected over 1,000 lbs of sharps through its drop box program that began last October – a service started in response to community safety concerns – and installed nine boxes at locations like parks and government centers. The department will expand the program to additional spots using funds from state opioid settlements. WQOW
