COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Eau Claire County Humane Association launched a new fundraiser to help cover dental cleanings and extractions for animals needing care as increasing numbers of surrendered pets—including cats—require procedures costing $800 — $1200.  WEAU
  • Eau Claire man Perry Kuznar will begin his 3,000-mile cross-country bike ride on October 3 from San Diego to St. Augustine to raise funds for local groups such as Sunrise Exchange Club, Immaculate Conception Parish, Hope Gospel Mission, and a veterans tribute memorial. He retired last year and will blog his progress while his wife Kathy supports him by driving with their teardrop camper + inviting donations.  WQOW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Voting is open today for the 10th Annual Coolest Thing Made in Wisconsin contest—nearly 150 products are competing, including local entries like Bigfoot BBQ Sauce, Cranberry Horseradish and the Norfold Southern Railway Bridge made by Veritas Steel. Votes can be cast once per day until September 30 as the top 16 move on to the Manufacturing Madness round with the winner to be crowned on October 23 in Madison.  WQOW

CRIME NEWS

  • Three therapy dogs—Donut, Murphy, and Millie—are stuck in jail and local Crime Stoppers are raising money to bail them out, with Donut at $150, Murphy at $118, and Millie still waiting for her first contribution.  WEAU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Flynn Elementary honored longtime kindergarten teacher Deb Schretenthaler — who passed away in May — by dedicating a peace bench during its Monday peace walk. Principal Pa Sia Moua said the tribute recognized her lasting impact on the school community.  WEAU
  • Flynn Elementary School held a ceremony on Monday when students, staff, and community unveiled a memorial bench to honor beloved kindergarten teacher Mrs. S—Deb Schretenthaler—who passed away earlier this year after a battle with cancer. The event also celebrated her role in starting the school's peace walk and helping to make Flynn an International Peace Site.  WQOW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Crews worked Monday morning on the final steps of the City of Eau Claire's pollinator project — workers tilled more than 80 acres and planted seeds near parks and roadways to boost biodiversity and reduce mowing costs as the seeds start growing this fall with full effect next spring.  WQOW
  • The Chippewa Valley Biodiversity Partnership is urging Eau Claire residents to leave 3 to 5 inches of leaves in their yards to help wildlife and boost plant nutrients—this campaign builds on the successful No Mow May effort as experts plan a panel on North American bird threats on October 1. This initiative encourages local community action to support a healthier ecosystem.  WEAU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Altoona city planning has set sights on a new East Neighborhood on an 80-acre city-owned property off Highway 12 that will include commercial spaces, single-family and multi-family homes, parks, and designated affordable housing. City Council will review the early-stage plans on Thursday — details such as lot numbers and infrastructure costs are not yet determined.  WQOW
  • At Monday's Eau Claire City Council meeting, nine residents supported council members Aaron Brewster and Joshua Miller after calls for their resignation over social media comments about the shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. They argued that free speech must be upheld—especially as Rep. Van Orden proposed blocking federal funding.  WQOW
