EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development awarded $998,114 in Fast Forward grants to 19 school districts, including Augusta, Elk Mound, and Durand-Arkansaw, to purchase high-tech equipment for technical education programs. The funds—covering items like a robotic hand and modular welding systems—will help students gear up for high-demand careers as announced by DWD Secretary Amy Pechacek. WEAU
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Tony Evers visited Chippewa Falls Middle School yesterday during his back-to-school tour and said the bipartisan budget increased funding for K12 schools but it is not enough. He urged adults to have their children vaccinated—since vaccine recommendations remain unchanged—and warned that many districts might soon face referendums if additional funds are not provided. WEAU
- ➤ Wisconsin lawmakers are considering a bill to expand the MoveOver law to require drivers to move over for any vehicle with flashing lights to protect roadside workers. The measure was referred to the Committee on Criminal Justice and Public Safety in August—legislators expect a hearing in the assembly this fall. WEAU
- ➤ The Eau Claire Fire Department answered over 30 calls Monday including two structure fires—one at a detached garage on the North side and one at an appliance on the West side where one person was treated for smoke inhalation, while crews also handled medical emergencies, arching wires, and motor vehicle accidents. - ➤ The ECPD explained that cars must stop for pedestrians at marked crosswalks—identified by large white blocks or double lines in busy areas—while vehicles at unmarked crossings in quieter neighborhoods only need to stop if there is a stop sign. The department is also installing more flashing pedestrian signs to alert drivers. WQOW
