COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Labor Fest returned to Phoenix Park as community members joined a solidarity walk organized by the Greater West Central Area Labor Council—spreading union opportunities ahead of new bargaining agreements in the fall.  WEAU

CULTURE NEWS

  • Eau Claire sites include the Old Orchard Cemetery from a former asylum and poor farm that cared for those in need since the 1880s, and unmarked horse cemeteries from the 1860s that changed in the 1870s — experts say these historic places reveal a hidden past.  WQOW
  • Greek Orthodox Metropolitan Bishop Nathanael Symeonides visited Eau Claire on Saturday, August 30—the first Orthodox bishop to do so—and said he does not plan for his visit to be the last.  Leader-Telegram

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tuesday morning, when hundreds of Chippewa Valley kids start school, former student Kylar Schubert becomes a new teacher at Sam Davey's as she teaches her first class today—marking a full-circle moment from growing up and studying in the district to leading her own classroom.  WQOW
  • Students at UW - Eau Claire took part in a 'Run the Hill' event that had between 800 - 1,000 participants running from lower campus to upper campus to earn free t-shirts and meet new classmates as classes begin Wednesday.  WEAU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Eau Claire City Manager updated residents on a new paid parking ordinance that will start in spring—downtown rates will be $1 per hour and buffer areas $0.50—and on a 15-mph speed limit for bicyclists on City trails. Updated signs will be installed and staff in busy parks will remind riders to slow down for safety.  WEAU
