COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Eau Claire's Half Moon Lake area holds remnants from a saw mill once operated by Kaiser Lumber that was abandoned in 1924 — its ruins include the old offices now home to Valley Burger Company and a vault that reveals a piece of local history. The site becomes even clearer in winter when fewer trees cover the cement blocks and old mill features.  WQOW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Xcel Energy has begun concrete repairs on the upstream face of the middle embankment at the Wissota Hydro Plant and expects to finish work within two weeks—impact on the public and environment is minimal.  WEAU

CRIME NEWS

  • A Chippewa Valley contractor, Anthony Brooks of Brooks Home Renovations in Eau Claire, is accused of 14 counts of theft by contractor after clients say he stole tens of thousands of dollars and faces a $50,000 signature bond with limits on managing trust accounts—his next hearing is set for Oct. 13.  WEAU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • This school year, Eau Claire classrooms will join Discover Dairy’s 'Adopt a Cow' program at Nellie Holsteins—each class will keep the same calf so students learn about cow behavior, diet, and how dairy products are made from farm to shelf.  WEAU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Representative Derrick Van Orden met with veterans and groups at VFW Post 305 in Eau Claire on Monday to discuss veteran issues and the planned closure of Klein Hall, a housing program for veterans. He urged Governor Evers to act fast—saying that keeping veterans off the streets is a priority.  WEAU

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Eau Claire City-County Health Department will hold an overdose prevention workshop at the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library on Aug. 28 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.—attendees must register by Aug. 27 though walk-ins are welcome.  WEAU
