COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jaquish Farm’s sunflower maze opens Saturday, August 23 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. to support Joshua’s camp, a local nonprofit that offers retreats for families whose child is battling cancer (wagon rides, a picking patch and food will be available).  WEAU
  • Eight local nonprofits received a $70,000 Community Health Cycle grant from the Eau Claire Community Foundation linked to a $9 million endowment from the former Sacred Heart Hospital—this fund is designed to support long-term health needs and aims to exceed $100,000 in grants next year. President Wes Escondo said the grant will help meet ongoing health demands in the Chippewa Valley.  WQOW

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Eau Claire Fire Rescue responded to a storage unit fire Wednesday morning on the west side after heavy black smoke and flames were seen on the roof of lockers — crews quickly extinguished the fire with no injuries reported.  News8000.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities have issued a Silver Alert for 81-year-old David Hogue after he went missing near midnight from his home on Indian Hills Drive and missed an 8 a.m. doctor's appointment—his green Volkswagen GTI with license plate 655-WHS was seen at 6:30 a.m. near the intersection of Hwy 10 and Hwy 12.  WQOW

  • Eau Claire is ranked second on USA Today's hidden gem list based on factors like restaurants, museums, landmarks, safety, and cleanliness — Tupelo took first place — and the ranking shows the city's strong music and arts scene with ties to Bon Iver.  WQOW

  • The Ronald and Joyce Wanek Foundation and Western Technical College opened the Wanek Center of Innovation today— a new facility for advanced manufacturing education and training.  The Chippewa Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Eau Claire City Council will vote on a paid parking ordinance at Tuesday’s meeting that will charge $1 per hour downtown to shift funding away from the general fund and help pay for the replacement of the aging Gibson Street ramp—if approved, the ordinance will also remove the current 2-hour parking limit and set parking enforcement from noon to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday.  WEAU
