- ➤ Ferguson's Orchard in Eau Claire opens Saturday at 9:30 a.m. for the season with apple cider donuts, new food choices like pizza, gluten free options and apple cider sundaes and slushies, plus family fun with train rides, a corn pit and playgrounds (including a gemstone mine and an interactive paintball gallery called the Saloon Shootout). CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Nathan Stevens, a 42-year-old from Eau Claire who led police on a chase that damaged seven police cars, pleaded not guilty on Aug. 12 and faces charges including 1st degree recklessly endangering safety—his case is set for a status conference on Nov. 5. WEAU
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ UWEC alumni will perform their fight song using kazoos at the Minnesota State Fair parade on August 27th to promote their upcoming 100th homecoming event. Gary Berg of the Alumni Association said the band—a nod to the original Bridgeman Hall Marching Kazoo Band from the 1970s—aims to connect graduates especially those in the Twin Cities area with their university spirit. - ➤ Beaver Creek Reserve received a $45,000 grant from the Eau Claire Community Foundation to update three outdoor buildings and expand its outdoor classrooms for educational programs, summer camps and events—staff, volunteers and local contractors are finishing renovations while 715 Excavating prepares an unused outdoor education site, and the reserve will host United Way’s Day of Caring on September 26. - ➤ The city of Eau Claire unanimously voted Tuesday night to start invoicing Eau Claire County for veteran grave maintenance under a state statute — city officials said the move will shift maintenance costs to the county moving forward. Leader-Telegram
