CRIME NEWS

  • A 39-year-old inmate died Monday after staff at Eau Claire County Jail found him unresponsive in his cell—another sheriff's office and the Medical Examiner will investigate his death as his name remains undisclosed.  News8000.com
  • Police in Eau Claire warned residents today that scam callers posing as officers threaten immediate cryptocurrency payments or jail — a tactic that grows more common in summer — and advise anyone suspicious to hang up and call law enforcement directly.  WEAU
  • Dominic Zamora, a 17-year-old charged in Augusta for shooting a moving vehicle with a BB gun on Lincoln St., entered a deferred acceptance guilty plea in court Monday—he must pay nearly $4,500 in restitution, enroll in a substance abuse treatment and recovery program, maintain absolute sobriety, avoid firearms and violent behavior, and if he meets these conditions his charges will be dismissed after 30 months.  WQOW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The plan commission approved City Council’s changes to the Century Code on Monday night, which relax tree preservation rules for existing lot owners—these changes affect zoning codes and ordinances. City Council will hold a public hearing on August 11 at 6 p.m. before voting on the update, and the new code is expected to be in effect by October 1.  WEAU
  • Eau Claire officials are asking residents to review designs for a replacement Dewey Street Bridge and two proposed trail crossing options. The city said public feedback will help shape the final project plan (submission details have been provided).  Leader-Telegram

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, the Eau Claire City County Health Department is warning residents to watch for tick-borne illnesses as summer winds down and tick season may last into fall. The department said Lyme disease is most common and is testing for the rare Powassan virus (which can cause rash, fever, and headache) while urging people to wear long sleeves outdoors (to help avoid tick bites).  WQOW
  • For the ninth year, the Dementia Coalition is hosting an event in Eau Claire to raise funds and share resources about dementia services—local residents will have access to important support information.  WEAU
  • Today, OakLeaf Clinics opened an urgent care center in Rice Lake at 2900 S. Wisconsin Avenue near Highway 53; it treats non-life-threatening conditions like asthma, flu and minor injuries. The facility operates Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. & on weekends from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. & on holidays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.  WQOW
