COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community leaders, including Blayne Midthun and State Rep Emerson, met Thursday morning at Ramone’s Ice Cream parlor to warn that the Big Beautiful Bill is expected to cut SNAP benefits and increase food pantry demand—prompting the shop to offer free scoops for canned food donations. Meanwhile, Rep. Derrick Van Orden said benefits will remain intact and dismissed the concerns as fearmongering.  WEAU

CRIME NEWS

  • A teen from Menomonie, 17-year-old Addison Bowell, now faces extra homicide charges in the hit and run death of Eau Claire marathon runner Ann Seidl whose body was found on County Highway Y on March 29, and a status conference will be held on Oct. 2.  WEAU

CULTURE NEWS

  • Country Jam kicked off Thursday in Eau Claire and drew hundreds of country music fans for a weekend festival featuring headliners Cole Swindell, Sam Hunt — and Bailey Zimmerman.  WEAU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • School officials at Eleva-Strum High School held a ribbon cutting for a new solar panel project featuring 184 panels that generate 100 kilowatts—enough to supply one fifth of the school's power and save the district $20,000 a year. The project will help students learn about energy conservation and sustainability.  WQOW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Marshfield Clinic Oakwood Center in Eau Claire will open its urgent care on Aug. 18 — offering services from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and relocating urgent care from Marshfield Medical Center to improve access amid rising patient visits.  WQOW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Eau Claire Axmen owner Jeff Holmes said he is looking to sell the franchise to new local owners after taking over in late May amid a lease dispute — he added that his ownership of the Iowa Woo means he must step back from one team. He said the Axemen will finish the season strong with a final home game on July 26th — and a new ownership group might bring changes to the team’s branding and coaching.  WEAU
