Good morning, Eau Claire. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 17th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Wednesday, locals took part in a 2-mile fun run at Carson Park to support Fierce Freedom’s mission to end human trafficking. The event offered music, food, and educational tents — and sponsors like Blue Ox Running backed the local fight against this issue.  WEAU
  • The Eau Claire Community Humane Association and The Brewing Projekt are partnering for an Alex and Tails beer label contest that invites locals to submit a pet photo and a brief description for a chance to be featured on a limited-edition beer can. Voting opens August 8 and the contest ends September 6 — all proceeds will support work for homeless animals.  WEAU
  • Eau Claire Parks, Recreation & Forestry said that Miracle League Field at Jeffers Park was damaged in recent weeks by unauthorized use—officials are reminding everyone of the field’s rules to protect players with disabilities.  WEAU
  • Aaron Jones, a Minnesota Vikings running back and former Green Bay Packer, held a football camp today at Regis High School in Eau Claire to give back to local kids and discuss his new quarterback J.J. McCarthy. He said the camp shows his commitment to both communities and helps inspire young athletes — a key part of his effort to grow local football talent.  WEAU
  • Floy Dorgan turned 103 on Wednesday at Heatherwood Assisted Living and Memory Care in Eau Claire—she said good health, happiness, and 'happy hour' helped her live so long—and friends joined her special party.  WEAU

CULTURE NEWS

  • Chippewa Falls High School art students are drawing detailed portraits for children in Malawi through the Memory Project—an initiative that has connected student talent with global outreach since 2018. The project, part of the National Art Honors Society, brings hope to kids facing poverty and conflict.  WEAU
  • Crews finished setting up the main stage, tents, and parking at the Eau Claire Event District where thousands of country music fans are expected to arrive from across the region. Verizon will supply a mobile asset trailer *The Llama* to boost connectivity as the three-day festival begins today.  WQOW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Next week, the Eau Claire City Council will consider the Century Code Update, a major change to the city's zoning rules that includes strict tree protection measures — a removal of a tree with a 12-inch diameter would need a replacement sapling or a $400 fee per inch. Some community members and local builders worry the rule could raise costs for homeowners, and two council members plan an amendment exempting most single-family properties before the July 21 meeting and the vote at 4 p.m. on July 22.  WQOW
  • On Tuesday, July 22, the Eau Claire City Council will vote on a new Code Update that may add a fee for removing trees on properties over 10,000 square feet. The fee is calculated as 30% of the inches removed and could reach $400 per inch for large trees, but it will not apply to small, sick, or dead trees, and the public can comment on July 21.  WEAU
