  • Chick-fil-A in Eau Claire hosted the Summer Smiles event Wednesday, where local non-profits joined a matching donation campaign to support programs; Sleep in Heavenly Peace partnered with Chick-fil-A and Markquart Motors to raise funds for building beds for children. Chick-fil-A gave away 50 chicken sandwiches — more Summer Smiles events will follow at different Chippewa Valley restaurants.  WQOW
  • Three local nonprofits—Chippewa Valley Pickleball Club, L.E. Phillips Senior Center, and YMCA of the Chippewa Valley—will share $15,000 from the Charity Classic 10K presented by Royal Credit Union during the Eau Claire Marathon on May 2. Race registrants will vote to allocate the funds, with the top charity receiving $8,000, the second $5,000 and the third $2,000.  WEAU

BUSINESS NEWS

  • For the second year, Wisconsin fairs require lactating dairy cattle to test negative for avian flu at least ten days before the show — a precaution taken after no avian flu cases have been found in dairy cattle — officials said today in Eau Claire.  WIProud

CRIME NEWS

  • Two Eau Claire neighbors, James Barbey aged 54 and Robert Karstensen aged 82, are charged with multiple counts of alleged child sexual assault after a months-long investigation of offenses spanning several years—Barbey has seven charges and Karstensen has 11; they appeared in court yesterday on cash bonds of $250,000 and $1,000,000 with a preliminary hearing set for July 8.  WQOW
  • A court ruled today to play parts of recorded interviews with two child witnesses in an officer-involved shooting case involving Thomas Burback, who is charged with intentionally pointing a firearm at an officer, failing to comply with custody attempts, possessing a firearm while intoxicated and disorderly conduct after an incident on May 25, 2024—his trial is set for Sept. 22—Sept. 26.  WEAU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday night, the Eau Claire city council approved changes to the 2026 Capital Improvement Plan budget that sets aside $48 million for projects including repairs to the aging wastewater treatment plant and replacement of the Gibson Parking Ramp — with the first phase costing $275,000 in 2026 and demolition planned for 2027. City officials also allocated $1 million for affordable housing efforts and noted that future projects could bring spending close to $70 million by 2027.  WEAU
