COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Brian Maki has been named the new executive director of the Northern Wisconsin State Fair Association; he will begin his tenure on June 30 & assume full responsibilities on Jan 1 when Rusty Volk retires after 17 years. He brings over 20 years of leadership experience & strong local ties that will benefit the state fair and community events.  WQOW
  • Goodwill’s Miracle League of the Chippewa Valley held its Opening Day event on June 16, giving 199 children with disabilities and their families a chance to play baseball in a newly designed field. MLCV Program Leader Amy Standiford said the event helped bring families together—ensuring every child could enjoy the game.  WIProud
  • City Council members discussed plans to update Owen Park’s playground amid concerns from residents who say the new equipment is too small for the park’s heavy use; community members are asking for a pause so they can fundraise $1 million while the city offers $250,000. Council member Nate Otto said a resolution to postpone the updates—prepared by Aaron Brooster—will be introduced in coming weeks to allow the community more time for input.  WEAU

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Just before midnight on Friday, the Eau Claire Fire Department responded to a camper fire on West Vine St that spread to the house’s attic while no one was home—fire crews contained the fire and the cause remains under investigation.  News8000.com

  • Local middle schooler Leila C from South Middle School in Eau Claire won the State Final Civics Bee on June 13—she bested seven finalists, earned a $1,000 prize, and will represent Wisconsin in the National Civics Bee championship in Washington, D.C.  WEAU
  • WESTconsin Credit Union awarded 14 $1,000 scholarships to local high school seniors based on academic achievement and community involvement — the awards honor their hard work — and support their pursuit of higher education.  WEAU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Eau Claire Elections Office is telling new residents to notify the U.S. Postal Service of their change-of-address to avoid voter registration problems—if a confirmation mailer is returned as undeliverable, the office will call to verify the address and may inactivate the voter record if it cannot be confirmed.  WQOW
  • The Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce held a meet and greet for new city council members Ethan Reed and Nate Otto where Reed said he will address city budgets and capital projects such as downtown parking and wastewater treatment, and Otto said he will work to improve parks and waterways. The event gave local business owners a chance to share their concerns with the officials — a discussion that sets a clear agenda for future government actions.  WEAU
