Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 10th of June.
Good morning, Eau Claire.
The Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Office updated on the 2023 inmate death investigation after Silver Jenkins was found unresponsive in her cell on March 12 — the Wisconsin Department of Justice concluded its review, declined to bring charges, and authorities determined her death resulted from dehydration due to her voluntary restriction of food and liquids.
At Messerschmidt Dairy in Eau Claire County, Felicia Erickson and her husband Dave hosted their fourth 'Hundreds on the Farm' event on June 9 to mark a changing era as small dairy farms face rising costs and fewer young locals choosing farming.
UW-Extension Educator Ryan Sterry said milk production in the Chippewa Valley increased—even as the number of grade A dairy farms dropped from about 500 to 257 in the past decade.
Wisconsin schools are asking for more state money for special education as only 31% of costs for 2023-2024 were reimbursed—forcing Eau Claire Area School District to cover over $20 million from local funds.
Executive director Mark Elworthy said that increasing funding in the new state budget would ease the district’s burden.
Eau Claire Police has shared summer safety tips as school ended to remind families about water safety + stranger danger and what to do when calling 911.
The department posted three videos on Facebook where resource officers explained these topics to help parents start important conversations at home.
Residents will be able to safely dispose of needles and syringes at no cost at the Chippewa County Department of Public Health throughout June, with a pop-up collection event scheduled on June 16 at the Chippewa Falls YMCA Monday Market from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. The program, extended after collecting over 250 pounds of sharps in May, helps reduce injury risks and safeguard local health efforts—supporting broader harm reduction practices.
The Miracle League of the Chippewa Valley kicked off its 2025 season in Eau Claire with 199 players and families coming together to enjoy baseball—program leader Amy Standiford said it gives children with disabilities a chance to play and build friendships.
