COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Friday, May 29, the Red Cedar Room Youth Group volunteered to help in the community when extra hands were needed and some kids returned to give further support; local leaders Kurt & Elizabeth Lebal thanked the group for spreading the light of Jesus.  WEAU
  • Culver’s will sell a Lemon Ice Cooler Special Olympics Wisconsin Edition from June 1 to 7 at locations including those on Bracket Avenue and Golf Road in Eau Claire (and Commercial Boulevard and Chippewa Crossing Boulevard in Chippewa Falls), and $1 from each sale will go to benefit the charity.  WEAU

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Friday, May 29, Walmart in Eau Claire celebrated its grand re-opening after a four-and-a-half month remodel that brought wider aisles, an expanded pharmacy, and improved layout & space for shopping while recognizing longtime employees and awarding $2,000 donations to local nonprofits.  WQOW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Three new films hit local theaters this week — the family comedy The Breadwinner, the horror film Backrooms, and the war drama Pressure are screening at Micon Cinemas in Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls as well as at the Oakwood Mall.  WEAU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Project SEARCH celebrated 11 students completing a 30-week internship program that helps students with disabilities learn skills for work in partnership with Mayo Clinic and the school district. The program will host its tenth anniversary celebration on Tuesday, June 2 at Pablo Center from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.  WEAU
  • The Chippewa Valley Technical College board approved a balanced budget of over $115 million for 2026-2027 on Thursday night in Chippewa County (showing a less than 1% increase from last year), with the final tax levy to be set in October.  WQOW
  • On Thursday, Meadowview Elementary received a $500 Tools For Schools grant to buy new books for Dylan Leonard's kindergarten class as students prepare for summer break. The books will help close the reading gap for those without access at home.  WQOW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday, a black bear was seen in Timber Bluff feeding from a resident’s bird feeders and later seen with two cubs; a DNR official advised removing attractants to discourage future visits.  WEAU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wisconsin State Patrol conducted 21 stops in a 2.5-hour crackdown on I-94 in Eau Claire County on Thursday, with drivers averaging 79 mph in a 60 mph zone — the highest speed recorded was 83.7 mph. WisDOT reminded drivers to follow posted speed limits and avoid distractions.  WQOW
  • The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection will set about 6,700 spongy moth traps across 36 counties from mid-May through early July to detect new infestations. Residents are asked to leave each trap undisturbed — traps are placed on public rights-of-way and selected private properties near emerging populations.  WQOW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Sis Paulsen, a former Eau Claire North hockey player, was selected for the UW Athletics Hall of Fame and will be honored later this fall at Camp Randall Stadium during the Wisconsin Football meeting with Eastern Michigan on Sept. 19 at 11:30 a.m. CT.  WEAU
  • Western Wisconsin track stars took part in sectionals Friday, May 29 — earning tickets to the state tournament at UW-La Crosse next weekend.  WEAU
