COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Fairfax Pool is set to open next Friday, June 5 — staff are training while the facility is upgraded with new changing room fences, a pavilion called The Lagoon, picnic tables, lounge chairs and a new sound system for daily open swim from 1–7 p.m.  WQOW
  • JONAH, a local faith-based nonprofit, is kicking off its annual community thrift sale today at First Presbyterian Church from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday + 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; every dollar raised supports programs in the Chippewa Valley.  WEAU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chippewa Valley Technical College approved its fully balanced 2026-27 budget yesterday at the Business Education Center in Eau Claire. VP of Administration Caleb Cornelius noted that the public can tour the campus (a chance to see firsthand the benefits of support) as programs continue without extra taxpayer burden.  WEAU
  • Chippewa Valley Technical College approved its 2026-2027 budget last Thursday in Eau Claire (the plan calls for employee salary increases).  Leader-Telegram

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A DNR expert advised residents to avoid feeding or approaching a black bear spotted near L.E. Phillips Memorial Library last week. The advice recommends securing trash and bird feeders and calling the police if the bear remains in residential areas.  WEAU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wisconsin State Patrol trooper Jim Fetherston parked in the I-94 median near the Foster exit south of Eau Claire Thursday morning to monitor speeds in a work zone. He issued a ticket to a driver going 18 mph over the limit amid ongoing construction.  WQOW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Care Partners West in Eau Claire will close after state officials revoked its license for repeated violations — all 51 residents will be relocated. A former employee, fired after reporting care issues, said her warnings about safety preceded the state investigation.  WEAU
  • Flowers are in bloom and pollen counts are high, triggering seasonal allergy issues for many local residents. Nurse practitioner Britny Poplawski of Marshfield Clinic advises using over-the-counter medications correctly or consulting a specialist (especially when sleep is affected).  WQOW
  • The ALS Association will host the 4th annual Walk to Defeat ALS Chippewa Valley at Carson Park on Saturday, June 6, inviting families and community groups to register, collect donations, and support local care services and research for ALS (a progressive disease).  WEAU

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Altoona boys tennis team clinched their second consecutive sectional title Friday, May 28, sending two singles and two doubles pairings to individual state — UW-Eau Claire’s Blake Postler was named North Region Men’s Athlete of the Year after a national championship hurdling season.  WEAU
  • The 2026 Badgers Football schedule lists kickoff times and TV channels for select games. The team will open against Notre Dame on Sept. 6 at Lambeau Field on NBC and face Minnesota on Nov. 27 at Camp Randall Stadium at 6:30 p.m.  WQOW
  • On Thursday, May 28, prep softball teams faced regional finals as Chippewa Falls won 12 to 0 over New Richmond and McDonell earned their fourth title — setting up a semifinal with Augusta. Prep baseball saw Regis and Cadott in regional semifinals across Western Wisconsin — local sports in action.  WEAU
