COMMUNITY NEWS

  • RCU Foundation + Eau Claire Marathon awarded grants to local nonprofits after community votes determined winners at the ECM 10K Charity Classic on Wednesday in Eau Claire.  Leader-Telegram
  • The Eau Claire Community Foundation awarded over $235,000 to 46 nonprofits to boost local programs and address emerging needs. The press release highlighted generous donor support — a factor that strengthens community efforts in Chippewa Valley.  WEAU
  • Feed My People Food Bank hosts its 26th annual Empty Bowls fundraiser (11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today) at its location, featuring local bowl art, food trucks, a silent auction, and guided tours to show how the food bank aids neighbors.  WEAU
  • Sally Derksen received the 2025 Distinguished Service Award on Monday, May 18 from the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library board and Friends of the library — recognizing her over 2,300 volunteer hours since 2018.  WEAU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tammy Olson, the 4K teacher and program director at Chapel Heights Preschool, retired after 42 years of teaching. Her retirement party was held Wednesday and she now looks forward to traveling with her husband and spending more time with her grandkids in Kentucky.  WEAU
  • Venture Academy broke ground on a new $22 million K-12 facility in Lake Hallie near Jacob's Well church; the campus will serve grades five through twelve while younger students remain in the current building. Construction is underway and the school will open for the 2027-2028 school year.  WQOW

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Garding Against Cancer golf outing is scheduled at Hickory Hills Golf Course on Friday, June 19th, with new organizer Matt Siverling aiming to raise $150,000 for UW Carbone Cancer Center research; Bob and Janet Lesniewski stepped back after leading the event to raise over $350,000 in previous years.  WEAU

SPORTS NEWS

  • Teams competed in WIAA softball regional semifinals with Altoona hosting La Crosse Logan in division two and Cloverbelt rivals McDonell and Regis clashing in division four—while the Eau Claire Express began their series with Fond du Lac.  WEAU
  • The Eau Claire Express beat the Rochester Honkers 9 to 3 on Opening Day — key plays by Anthony Martinez and Bryce Ehr helped secure the win. They wrapped up the series Thursday night and will travel to Thunder Bay Friday and Saturday before returning for a Sunday matinee with the Border Cats.  WEAU
