COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Oakwood Hills Senior Living Center gave out free donuts and coffee to seniors and law enforcement officers yesterday, and officers visited with therapy dog Donut while seniors had their mugshots taken for fun — a show of mutual respect that kicked off the center's Blue Tuesday initiative where everyone wears blue to support the police.  WIProud
  • The Eau Claire Community Humane Association will host its 39th annual Fido and Friends Fun Run at Carson Park on May 17—organizers expect over 200 dog lovers to join the 5K run with vendors, adoptable pets and prizes while raising funds for animal care and shelter upkeep. Tickets cost $35 and pre-registration ends on May 14, though same-day registration is available.  WEAU

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local artist Joe Maurer is using mineral paint to turn a pedestrian tunnel off 5th Avenue near the Mayo Clinic into a nearly 2,000-foot mural—illustrating how beavers shaped the Chippewa River; he started the project with a local grant and will complete it in 24 days.  WIProud

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UW-Eau Claire Chancellor James Schmidt, who led the school through tough budget cuts and the pandemic, will step down on June 30th to become president at James Madison University—he leaves behind efforts to grow undergraduate programs and boost local partnerships.  WEAU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Several police departments held a memorial service in Viroqua on May 14 to honor fallen officers from local and national departments—Sheriff Roy Torgerson said the event reminded attendees of the ultimate sacrifices made by law enforcement.  WIProud
  • On Tuesday, the Eau Claire City Council voted unanimously to support a new Film and Television Production Incentive Program—and reestablish a Wisconsin Film Office. The measures are expected to boost local film and TV production and create new opportunities in our community.  Leader-Telegram
  • Grace Lutheran Communities, Hope Village, Western Dairyland Economic Opportunity Council, and Stepping Stones of Dunn County received a total of $133,700 from WHEDA on Wednesday to improve accessibility and resources at shelters and transitional residences in Chippewa Valley (the funds address a high local need for accessible housing). Stepping Stones has begun adding ADA features to its shelters and WHEDA Housing grant applications will open in June.  WEAU

  • Community leaders and housing advocates met Wednesday night at the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library to discuss ways to provide lower-cost homes in Eau Claire as rising rents and a limited housing inventory challenge local families — representatives from Hope Village explained that housing costs have doubled in the past seven years while incomes have not kept pace.  WEAU
