  • Local artist Joe Maurer is transforming a pedestrian tunnel off 5th Avenue near the Mayo Clinic into a nearly 2,000-foot mural that shows a beaver building a dam on one side and native turtles on the other—he plans to complete the project in 24 days after receiving a $10,000 grant.  WEAU

CRIME NEWS

  • Shane Helmbrecht made a video appearance at Eau Claire County Court for an arraignment on first-degree intentional homicide charges for the August 2016 killing of his neighbor, Jenn Ward, but his case has been delayed as prosecutors requested extra time to address a pending competency appeal — his hearing is now set for July 28.  WIProud

  • Mike Love from the Beach Boys said he is excited about performing at the Pablo Center in Eau Claire on May 18 — the band will share its classic sound during the show.  WEAU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city of Eau Claire received the first installment of a $9.4 million settlement with 3M over PFAs on May 13— the payment was $1.68 million and will be made in installments through 2033. The settlement is the first of four claims expected to exceed $12 million, though city attorney Stephen Nick said the funds do not cover all response costs to protect the water supply.  WIProud
  • Childcare providers took A Day Without Childcare on May 13 to protest a $480 million cut from the Governor’s proposed budget that may force 25% of facilities to close. Lawmakers and advocates gathered at Julia’s Schoolia in Eau Claire and will rally at the Capitol tomorrow if the funding is not reinstated.  WIProud

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Monday, May 19, the Health Department will start testing water at seven local beaches for bacteria and harmful algae blooms—if unsafe levels are found, closures or advisories may be issued until Labor Day.  WEAU
  • ClearSky Health announced plans to build a new rehabilitation hospital—45,000 square feet with 36 beds—in Eau Claire that will treat more than 650 patients annually and create about 100 new jobs, with an opening set for mid-2026.  WQOW
