COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Chippewa Valley Council will host its 22nd annual Scouting America Leadership Dinner at Florian Gardens in Eau Claire on May 1 to support local scouting programs for over 2,600 youth and honor Dick Freitag—Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs will be the guest speaker.  WEAU

CRIME NEWS

  • An Eau Claire man accused of arson appeared in court Thursday, and a $10,000 signature bond was set for 71-year-old Jeffrey Root—whose next hearing is scheduled for May 29th.  WEAU
  • 17-year-old Addison Bowell of Menomonie was charged with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and hit and run after Eau Claire marathon runner Ann Seidl was fatally struck on County Highway Y in the Town of Dunn on March 29th (her mother said Bowell admitted to drinking before the incident) and she is scheduled to be arraigned on June 24th.  WEAU
  • Eau Claire County police charged 41-year-old Nathan Stevens after a chase damaged seven police cars and resulted in charges of first-degree recklessly endangering safety, fleeing and eluding, and possession of meth (bond set at $35,000 with a hearing on May 27 at 9:30 a.m.).  WEAU
  • Eau Claire man 39-year-old Corey Hobbs was sentenced to 110 months in federal prison after pleading guilty on Jan. 7 to distributing methamphetamine to a confidential informant in Nov and Dec 2023—he was arrested on Dec. 31, 2023.  WEAU
  • An Eau Claire man was sentenced in federal court Thursday for selling methamphetamine—Corey Hobbs was charged last year with three counts of distributing the drug, had two charges dismissed in a plea deal, and received a 110-month prison sentence for the remaining count.  WQOW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Chippewa Valley Health Cooperative plans to build a new community hospital in Lake Hallie that will hire over 400 employees and bring an economic impact of over $40 million, with the 144,000 square foot facility expected to open in late 2027 or early 2028. The building will be located along the Highway 53 corridor — and the cooperative is considering the temporary reopening of St. Joseph’s to offer services sooner.  The Chippewa Herald
  • The Eau Claire City-County Health Department started a disease tracking dashboard Thursday—this tool gives weekly updates on illnesses like COVID-19, the flu, Lyme disease and whooping cough while showing ways to stay safe. Rachel Mukai said the dashboard was made to help people and groups easily track how diseases are spreading in our county.  WQOW
