COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Becca Roth, a UW-Eau Claire student in a wheelchair, helped city officials decide to install a rapid-flashing LED beacon (costing $10,000) at the Water Street and Third Avenue crosswalk this spring. She also launched a student group to improve campus accessibility.  WEAU
  • WEAU received several storm photos from viewers after the April 13 weather event and invites residents to share more images through its Facebook page or website.  WEAU
  • The Wisconsin Lottery will bring the Winner Wagon to Eau Claire on April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Festival Foods parking lot (3007 Mall Dr) for in-person prize validations up to $200,000. Prize payments will be made by check only and cashed at US Bank or the winner’s preferred method.  WEAU

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A study of Lake Altoona finds that while the lake supports the regional economy, ongoing water quality issues continue to affect annual earnings (researchers call for urgent improvements).  Leader-Telegram

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Altoona police responded to four construction-related crashes last week and urged drivers to slow down, keep extra following distance, and avoid distractions as work on Highway 53 will close right lanes for construction starting today & cause traffic delays. They advise planning alternative routes.  WEAU

HEALTH NEWS

  • A free foot and nail clinic at Grace Lutheran Church is helping local residents with foot health issues this week while UW-Eau Claire nursing students gain training — fall clinic sign-ups open Sept. 28 for appointments Oct. 12-16.  WEAU
  • The City-County Health Department asked for help after a large black dog (possibly a rottweiler or pitbull) bit someone at 11:30 on West MacArthur Avenue in Eau Claire on Monday morning, as officials work to verify the dog’s rabies status and urge anyone with information to call 715-839-4972.  WQOW
