ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Last Sunday, Alan Schlewitz fell overboard from his boat on the Eau Claire River while his son Sam rescued him by steadying the controls and calling for help (first responders later treated Alan for hypothermia and shock), and both are now recovering.  WQOW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Harding Avenue in Eau Claire is also known as Plank Hill because wooden planks were added in the 1800s to help horses climb the steep, muddy road; Chippewa Valley Museum director Carrie Ronnander said similar techniques eased travel on other local hills.  WQOW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Monday, the Eau Claire Area School Board reduced staffing following a drop in student numbers by cutting hours for 20 teachers & not renewing 21 contracts for next school year.  WEAU
  • Fall Creek School District seeks a referendum to add a new attached building for middle school students due to capacity issues (the facility will include classrooms and an auditorium-gym). The vote is today and could raise property taxes by $4 per $100,000 in home value.  WEAU
  • Eau Claire Area School District faces a $10.5M gap for the 2026 — 27 school year as rising health care, salary, and utility costs combine with lower tax revenue; district officials are thinking of cutting 40 certified jobs — a move expected to save $4.2M. Staff shared these details at a board meeting on Monday.  WQOW
  • On Monday at Flynn Elementary during a school assembly, principal Pa Sia Moua was hit with a pie by her older sister—principal Khoua Vang of Locust Lane Elementary—as part of a contest to boost student participation in Finn’s Mission to learn lifesaving skills.  WQOW

  • Residents with private wells can test their drinking water this April using discounted kits provided by the Eau Claire department — the initiative is designed to ensure safer water in local homes.  Leader-Telegram

  • On Monday, Apr. 6, UW-Stout hosted UW-Eau Claire in a rivalry baseball game while Osseo-Fairchild hosted Elk Mound in a prep diamond clash. Team Hebert earned another national title win.  WEAU
  • Team Hebert representing the Eau Claire Curling Club won its second straight junior national curling title by defeating Team Grabow 3-2 this past weekend in Bismarck, and the win capped a season that included a World Junior title and Olympic trials participation.  WEAU
