BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hurlburt Heating and Plumbing announced it will raise prices by 25% starting April 1 due to rising costs for copper, other metals and PVC piping from overseas tariffs + the company said the new rates will remain permanent to stay competitive.  WQOW
  • On Tuesday, the lights were turned on at the new Bargain City that now occupies the vacant Big Lots space on Hamilton Ave after the store closed mid-December following a bankruptcy filing early last fall—Bargain City also has other locations in Chippewa Falls and Rice Lake.  WQOW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Late Black River Falls artist Truman Lowe, a UW-La Crosse alumnus, will have over 50 pieces of his artwork — including sculptures and paintings — exhibited this fall at the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian in Washington D.C. starting October 24.  The Chippewa Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. James C. Schmidt, UW-Eau Claire chancellor with over 30 years in higher education, will become the next president of James Madison University and said he is honored to take on the new role. Interim Provost Mike Carney will serve as the interim chancellor at UW-Eau Claire until a permanent leader is named.  WEAU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local first responders in the Chippewa Valley trained together Wednesday to simulate evacuation plans and rescues if the Altoona Dam fails and floods Eau Claire and Altoona. County agencies, including police, fire and the Red Cross, worked together to address communication issues—helping them prepare better for future emergencies.  WQOW
  • Motorists should expect a lane switch on westbound I-94 today from US 53 to Mallard Road as temporary lanes are used for pavement & bridge replacement work. County J in Washington will close at 6 a.m. on Monday and remain closed until July & drivers must follow detour routes via US 53, County D, County K and County JJ.  WEAU
