Good morning, Eau Claire. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 22nd of March.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Govin's Farm, a popular attraction in the Chippewa Valley, is opening its lambing barn today for its annual spring babies event and will host farm activities for a month. Visitors will get a chance to see lambs, piglets, and chicks as well as enjoy new features like a paint ball gallery — a giant Easter basket for family photos.  WQOW
  • UW-Eau Claire students from five A cappella groups will hold a concert on March 29 at 2 p.m. at the Davies Center to raise funds and food donations since Sojourner House—Eau Claire’s only overnight homeless shelter—is at risk of reducing its operations due to funding shortfalls.  WQOW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • This morning, workers placed Circle K signs on a former Holiday station — at the corner of South Hastings Way and Birch Street in Eau Claire as the company begins its switch to Circle K service stations. Circle K lists four stores in Eau Claire, three in Chippewa Falls, and three in nearby communities — though the full transition has not been completed.  WEAU

CRIME NEWS

  • Altoona police arrested a man and his mother—Zachary and Lisa Gilman—earlier this week after search warrants found nearly 600 Xanax pills, over 40 grams of cocaine, more than 150 painkiller pills and several guns at Lisa's home used as a daycare, and both will appear in court in April facing many charges.  WQOW
  • The Eau Claire Police Department finished its review of an officer involved shooting that happened on Dec. 22nd, 2024 in Lafayette when 49-year-old Matthew Luke fired shots during a domestic violence call, led police on a chase, and crashed his vehicle, with District Attorney Newell stating Detective Zac Becker acted in self-defense (the review found his actions reasonable and in line with department policy).  WEAU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today marks one year since HSHS St. Joseph’s and HSHS Sacred Heart hospitals closed along with more than a dozen clinics, and legislators explained that $15 million in reallocated funds remain in limbo due to pending legal actions and an upcoming Supreme Court race. Senators Jeff Smith and Jesse James said the situation shows a broken for-profit health system — legal cases have stalled the funding — leaving the Chippewa Valley’s emergency care uncertain.  WEAU

SPORTS NEWS

  • At the Chippewa Valley Expo Center this weekend, the Wisconsin Sport Show returned to Eau Claire when doors opened Friday afternoon and thousands began exploring over 190 booths. Visitors will see vendors for fishing supplies and trip planning services as well as family activities (free for kids 11 and under) until Sunday at 4 p.m.  WQOW
