COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Thursday morning, the Red Cross of Wisconsin Northwest held its 22nd annual Heroes Breakfast — seven awards were given to local heroes, including Doris Durst, a former veterinarian now volunteering with the Red Cross. The nonprofit also urged community members to get involved by donating, volunteering, or donating blood this March.  WQOW
  • The fourth annual Tossing High for CRI cornhole tournament will take place on Saturday, March 28 at Loopy’s Grill and Saloon (Chippewa Falls). Competitors from across the state will join recreational divisions in a friendly fundraiser for CRI.  WEAU

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local theaters debut new films this week including the Colleen Hoover adaptation Reminders of Him at Micon, Chippewa Falls and Oakwood Mall—a variety of other films, including A24’s horror undertone and Silver Screen Senior Series’ On Golden Pond on March 19 at 10 a.m., also are scheduled.  WEAU
  • Gov. Tony Evers visited the Micon Theater in Eau Claire today to watch a trailer for Winter Hymns — a local film that spotlights tax incentives and support from the state film office.  Leader-Telegram

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Freddie the Fire Truck is back in action after CVTC Mechatronics students repaired his speakers and water sprayer, making him ready to visit elementary classrooms — Eau Claire Fire Rescue plans to feature him in upcoming fire prevention events.  WQOW
  • Five candidates will appear on the ballot for the Eau Claire Area School District School Board spring election on April 7 — local voters will soon choose their school board representatives.  Leader-Telegram

HEALTH NEWS

  • Blugold students are partnering with the City-County Health Department to offer free PFAS testing for residents with private wells in Eau Claire County; test results vary even among neighbors and residents needing a kit should call the department.  WEAU
  • Mary Behling, founder of the Cancer Care Bag Project, was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer and received one of her own comfort bags while preparing for the 7th Annual Craft and Small Business Showcase at Memorial High School from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow as community support poured in.  WEAU

  • The WIAA boys basketball sectional semifinals had Stanley-Boyd meet Galesville/Ettrick/Trempealeau, Saint Croix Central face Osceola, Menomonie face New Richmond, and La Crosse Central go against West Salem on March 12 — Chippewa Falls’ swimmer Evelyn Arnold committed to Truman State.  WEAU
