COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local nonprofit Home for Good will host its inaugural Coldest Night of the Year this Saturday from 4-7pm with a 2k/5k walk along downtown trails that ends with a light meal & presentation at The Lismore. The free event brings families together to support affordable housing for community members.  WEAU
  • Registration is open for the 18th annual Amazing Eau Claire Clean-Up on April 25 — volunteers will clean trash, sweep sidewalks, rake parks, and spread playground chips throughout the city; assignments and supplies will be provided as the event date approaches.  WQOW
  • The Eau Claire RV Show in Chippewa Valley began on Friday and continues through Sunday, March 1 at the Chippewa Valley Expo Center. Free admission, a balloon artist for kids, and special RV deals from local dealers add extra fun as the camping season starts.  WEAU

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local theaters feature new films this week: Scream 7, a controversial horror film, plays at Micon Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls, and Oakwood Mall; EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert screens at Chippewa Falls; and Best Picture nominees with Misery (playing March 5, 10 a.m. at Downtown Cinema) round out the lineup.  WEAU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Prairie Ridge Early Learning has honored special education teacher Abby Wold with the Golden Apple award today. The school, in partnership with Mayo Clinic Health System and the Eau Claire Public Schools Foundation, will present her a $500 prize for her leadership and support for young students and their families.  WEAU
  • Local students competed in the SkillsUSA regional competition Friday as over 440 trainees showcased trade skills across events including the automotive service technology contest held at the CVTC Transportation Education Center in Eau Claire; top performers will advance to the state conference in Madison later this year.  WEAU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dunn County Transit now serves over 100,000 rides after streamlining routes, upgrading vehicles, and adding GPS tracking. Officials say the system, which offered free fares (initially), hit a record 126,000 riders in 2023 and continues to earn community trust.  WEAU
  • Altoona city leaders unveiled a multi-million-dollar plan at the latest Eggs and Issues event to boost affordable housing by using $6 million from a tax district closure to fund an 80-acre development — the plan aims to lower entry-level home prices, which now average about $425,000.  WEAU

HEALTH NEWS

  • According to Planning Commission documents, Mayo Clinic in Eau Claire is planning a 10,000 sqft expansion to its emergency department that will add lower, first, and second floors (with future vertical expansion to five stories) to ease congestion; it awaits March 2nd review before spring construction and a 2027 opening.  WQOW
