ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Some Eau Claire residents were displaced after a duplex fire Monday night at 2929 Northland Drive as firefighters put out a kitchen blaze that claimed one cat's life while ensuring no people were hurt.  WQOW

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 98th Academy Awards are less than three weeks away and viewers will soon be able to stream Best Picture nominees such as Bugonia on Peacock, F1 on Apple TV, and Frankenstein on Netflix — with other films available to rent or stream on HBO Max and Hulu.  WEAU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students gained career insights after UW-Eau Claire hosted a panel on workforce readiness with UW president Jay Rothman, local business leaders, and alumni last Tuesday at the Pablo Center. The panel highlighted how diverse career paths can grow from the UWEC foundation.  WQOW
  • Longfellow Elementary School honored special education assistant Charlotte Back with the Golden Apple award yesterday (she and the school each received $500 from Wipfli and the Eau Claire Public Schools Foundation). The principal praised her effective work with students with challenging behaviors to support their success.  WEAU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Eau Claire City officials announced that the Street Ambassador program will end on March 19, after Block by Block missed key goals for cleaning and graffiti removal downtown. City leaders plan to look into new models soon.  WQOW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Emplify Health and local fire departments are bringing back the Mugs for Rugs event in Eau Claire to help reduce falls among seniors by exchanging throw rugs for free+ coffee mugs. More details on timing and location will be provided soon.  The Chippewa Herald
  • Elder care facilities in the Coulee and River Valley regions are grappling with a nursing shortage today due to low wages and demanding work — a challenge that could limit care for residents.  The Chippewa Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Nick White — a longtime WIAA official — urged players, coaches and fans to maintain respect and calm following Tuesday's start of the girls basketball tournament. He stressed that referees and school talks can help prevent conflicts at local games.  WEAU
  • The WIAA girls basketball playoffs began Tuesday, Feb. 24, with Eau Claire North hosting Wausau West in division one while other divisions held key matchups and UW-Stout played in the WIAC tournament.  WEAU
