COMMUNITY NEWS

  • World Relief reported that fewer than 50 refugees were resettled locally this past year — a drop from 75 in 2023 — while 1,000 refugees were resettled statewide. The organization focuses on supporting those already here to help them feel at home.  WEAU
  • Raintree Garden Center hosted its 5th annual benefit thrift sale on Feb. 20 and is holding the sale today at 7470 20th Avenue from 8-4 p.m. Community members can shop donated items to help raise about $2,000 for Chippewa Humane Association.  WEAU
  • A coffee shop honoring late Tilly opens this Saturday at 8:30 a.m. in Fall Creek as owner Meghan Harder shares her daughter's legacy through a special drink and heartfelt decor. The shop also offers a signature blend with a portion of sales going to the Tilly Harder Memorial (a local non-profit).  WQOW
  • The 47th annual Chippewa Valley Home Show is underway at the Chippewa Valley Expo Center through Sunday, Feb. 22, with over 120 vendors offering home supplies, prizes, seminars, and family day activities for kids, plus a new interactive map for vendor details — a useful tool for any home project.  WQOW

  • Western Wisconsin’s Chris Kroeze will release his first full-length album Even Rednecks Get the Blues at Pablo Center today at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are available online.  WEAU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Roosevelt Elementary School instructional coach Laurie Jo Brott (known for her positive impact) was honored with the Golden Apple award, and both she and the school will each receive $500 from Nicolet Bank and the Eau Claire Public Schools Foundation as they launch a new reading curriculum.  WEAU
  • On Friday, 4th graders at Flynn Elementary joined a writing workshop when author Tonya Wolfe visited to show them how to use their own voice in storytelling. The event was held under the Diverse Author and Artist Series Grant from the school district.  WEAU

HEALTH NEWS

  • OakLeaf Surgical Hospital in Altoona announced that Scott Polenz — a native of Eau Claire with 25 years of healthcare experience — will be its new CEO effective Feb. 24; he will focus on strategic priorities to advance the hospital’s mission in the Chippewa Valley.  WQOW
  • Eau Claire lawmakers introduced legislation today to create a state tax credit allowing residents to refund the loss of federal premium assistance for qualified health plans under the Affordable Care Act. The bill aims to stabilize coverage amid rising costs and local hospital closures (a needed safety net for families).  WEAU

SPORTS NEWS

  • Girls wrestlers sought tickets to the state tournament at sectionals Friday and prep boys swimmers competed in division two state meets. The Chippewa Steel hosted the Fairbanks Ice Dogs — a local contest that drew community attention.  WEAU
