- ➤ Local author Jerry Poling has released his new book 'American Birkebeiner: The Nation’s Greatest Ski Marathon' — a definitive history of the race that draws elite skiers and fans every February — and it recently won the ULLR Book Award from Skiing History. WEAU
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Northstar Middle School secretary Ashley Bellendorf was honored with the Golden Apple award and received $500 from Kristo Orthodontics and the Eau Claire Public Schools Foundation (a nod to her supportive role at the school). WEAU
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Sen. Baldwin visited candidate Rebecca Cooke on the campaign trail in La Crosse as she works to address rural health care shortages after HSHS hospital closures in Eau Claire. Cooke, running for Wisconsin’s 3rd congressional district, plans to raise Medicare, Medicaid, and reimbursement rates for small-town communities. WEAU
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Eau Claire City-County Health Department and County Opioid Task Force are accepting proposals for opioid settlement grants to expand treatment and recovery support this February in Eau Claire — interested applicants must follow the official guidelines. Leader-Telegram
REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ Jeff explained that near the Eau Claire Event District a completed warehouse + industrial building are present and plans include a hotel, multifamily housing and retail space; the area will see more growth as County Highway T expands into a four-lane divided highway next year. WQOW
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ The UW-Eau Claire Shamrock Shuffle 5K will be held on March 7 at 10 a.m. on campus, with the route starting at the upper campus and finishing at the McPhee Physical Education Center along the Chippewa Valley River Trail (registration is open until Feb. 19). WEAU
- ➤ The WIAA boys hockey playoffs began Tuesday at Eau Claire Memorial as local teams faced off in regional semifinal matchups, with Eau Claire North battling Tomahawk & Chippewa Falls facing RAM hockey & New Richmond trying to upset D.C. Everest. WEAU
- ➤ Eau Claire Flying Eagle Ben Loomis competed on Tuesday in his last individual event at the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics, jumping 123 meters in ski jumping and finishing 22nd before completing cross country in 27th place. He will join teammate Nick Malacinski for the team combined event on Friday. WEAU
