COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Registration is now open for the 10th Miracle League of the Chippewa Valley, a baseball program for players (ages 4–19) with disabilities at Miracle Field in Eau Claire. The eight-week season begins in June and registration for players and volunteers ends March 3.  WEAU
  • WESTconsin Credit Union in Eau Claire is hosting a Hearts for Hope fundraiser supporting children's hospitals; a $5 donation earns a paper heart, and proceeds benefit Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare and Gundersen Health System (La Crosse). The event began Monday, Feb. 2 and runs through Valentine's Day.  WQOW

CULTURE NEWS

  • UW-Eau Claire hosts a Martin Luther King Jr. Day exhibit opening and award presentation today from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Alumni Room at Davies Center; the exhibit honors social justice and campus figures and will be on view throughout Black History Month.  WEAU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • DeLong Middle School teacher Lizzy Ehrenberg won the Golden Apple Award for her leadership and care for all students. The award came with a $500 grant for both the teacher & the school, provided by Lasker Jewelers to support classroom improvements.  WEAU
  • UW-Eau Claire hosted a WWII pilots training program for about 1,000 soldiers during a 15‐month wartime course in the 1940s, converting campus spaces into barracks and classrooms. The university preserves soldiers’ letters and service awards that affirm the program as one of the top in the western region.  WQOW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The UW–Madison Division of Extension will host the Chippewa Valley Healthy Water Summit on March 20 to teach local residents about water quality and provide practical information. This one-day event aims to increase awareness and help protect local water sources.  The Chippewa Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nominations for the Second Annual Friend of Human Services Award are open until Feb. 13 — community members may nominate local individuals, businesses, or nonprofits who enhance services provided by ECCDHS. The award honoree will be recognized at the Human Services Board meeting on April 13.  WEAU

HEALTH NEWS

  • Texas Roadhouse in Eau Claire held its charity night on Monday for Tinnitus Awareness Week by donating proceeds to the American Tinnitus Association to fund research + expand education while honoring its late founder, Kent Taylor; the event marked its fifth annual fundraiser.  WEAU
  • The Eau Claire City-County Health Department has shared tips to protect residents from carbon monoxide poisoning by advising people to install working detectors on every level & use proper procedures with generators and fuel-burning appliances.  WEAU

  • Monday night, top prep girls basketball teams in Western Wisconsin played as Colfax beat Spring Valley, Neillsville topped Assumption, and Webster stayed undefeated by beating Cadott while Eau Claire Memorial squared with Hudson; in boys hoops, Altoona earned its ninth straight win over McDonell.  WEAU
