  • Eau Claire native Catherine Goebel celebrated her 100th birthday today at the house where she grew up - friends braved the cold to join her celebration. She credits her good health for this milestone and treasures spending the day with loved ones.  WEAU

CULTURE NEWS

  • Power of Perception will host its 3rd annual Black & Red Ball fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Pablo Center. The event will feature a dynamic fashion show by the nonprofit's mentees to mark Black History Month.  WEAU

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Xcel Energy is sharing energy-saving tips as extreme cold begins today in Eau Claire and the Upper Midwest. The company advises customers to lower thermostats, seal drafts, and use assistance programs, noting that reducing the temperature by one degree can lower bills by up to 3+ percent.  WQOW

HEALTH NEWS

  • AAA advises local drivers to prepare for cold weather by testing batteries, checking tire pressure, and reviewing fluids before long trips. Residents are urged to stock emergency supplies and drive cautiously on icy roads.  WEAU
  • Local medical experts at Marshfield Medical Center advise residents to dress warmly and layer up, including wearing hats (with mittens and scarves) as freezing temperatures approach. They warn that frostbite signs such as red, blanching skin and numbness call for gradual warming indoors.  WEAU
  • The Humane Society advises residents to keep pets indoors amid below-freezing temperatures and to provide safe outdoor shelter with unfrozen water and food if needed. Officials note that these precautions help prevent frostbite and other winter-related health risks.  WEAU

  • UW-Eau Claire athletics director Jason Verdugo said the two-year shift from Zorn Arena to Sonnentag has boosted amenities for fans, student athletes, and local children — nearly doubling capacity and reinforcing a hometown feel; the Blugolds men's and women's teams will play this week.  WEAU
  • The U.S. National Crokicurl Championships will be held this Saturday at Altoona’s River Prairie Park despite cold weather; extra fire pits and indoor breaks will keep players warm while Wintertide offers bingo & board games at the River Prairie Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  WQOW
